Social media giant Meta rolls out highly anticipated sharing tool alongside new map and friends features
Instagram officially launched its long-awaited repost feature on August 6, 2025, allowing users to natively share public content from other creators directly to their own feeds for the first time in the platform’s history.
The new reposts feature enables users to reshare public reels and feed posts with a simple tap of the repost icon, addressing a functionality gap that has existed since Instagram’s launch in 2010. Unlike third-party reposting apps, Instagram’s native feature properly credits original creators and includes the content in a dedicated “Reposts” tab on users’ profiles.

How It Works
To repost content, users simply tap the new repost icon on any public reel or post. The feature includes an option to add personal commentary through a thought bubble interface before sharing. Reposted content will appear in followers’ feeds as recommendations and can be easily revisited in the dedicated profile tab.
Significantly for content creators, the feature offers expanded reach potential. When users repost creator content, it may be recommended to the reposter’s followers even if they don’t follow the original creator, providing new discovery opportunities.
Part of Broader Update
The repost feature debuts alongside Instagram’s new location-sharing map and “Friends” tab in Reels. The map feature allows users to share their location with selected friends and discover location-based content, while the Friends tab shows content that connections have liked, commented on, or reposted.
Long-Awaited Addition
The native repost functionality addresses years of user requests and eliminates reliance on third-party apps that often provided inferior user experiences. The feature is rolling out globally as part of Instagram’s broader push to enhance social connections and content discovery on the platform.
Privacy controls remain robust, with location sharing requiring explicit opt-in and comprehensive customization options for parents supervising teen accounts.
The update represents Instagram’s continued evolution as it competes with platforms like TikTok, which has long offered native reposting capabilities.
